• Costa Smeralda
The Costa Smeralda, or Emerald Coast, of Sardinia is named for the gorgeous and unusual emerald green tone along the shore, created by the color of the submerged orange rocks. I was fortunate to be able to borrow a helicopter for a day, as this unique phenomenon is best illustrated from the air. Pictured here is Saudade, racing in the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta.
• Tenacious
A peaceful moment riding on the leeward rail of Tenacious. This is a tricky location to perch and shoot, as most boats have no convenient hand rails. I am entirely reliant upon the rail and life lines, which could quickly become submerged by a large wave or during a sudden gust of wind!
• Firefly
My father and I campaign Firefly, a wooden 1926 Herreshoff, in the summer classic yacht racing circuit on Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Built in Bristol between 1919 and 1938, the S Class is the oldest one-design class still sailing the original boats. A number of fleets of these competitive little yachts remain active. Many of the ninety-five original boats still hoist their sails, and fifteen competed in the 90th Anniversary Celebration at the Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta in 2009.
This photo was taken while tacking back to the mooring at dusk, following a peaceful sunset cruise around the harbor. A blur of The Newport Pell Bridge is visible in the background.
• The Rainbow Fleet is Nantucket's pot of gold! These brightly colored micro-yachts add spirit and pulse to the annual Opera House Cup classic boat regatta.
• Mariette and Eleonora
Designed by Nathaniel G. Herreshoff, Mariette and Eleonora are two of the most extraordinary classic schooners sailing today. While Mariette has been restored from her original construction, Eleonora is a reproduction from Herreshoff's design of Westward, completed in 2003. Photographed shortly after an unexpected squall dumped several inches of icy hail on the Regates Royale fleet in Cannes, France, 2007.
• Grenada Workboats #1
The annual Workboat Regatta portion of the Grenada Sailing Festival is perhaps one of the most spirited and colorful events in sailing! The racing between the sailors onboard these former fishing boats gets quite competitive, although the tactics have more to do with keeping the boat afloat than the racing rules of sailing. In fact, I am sure most of the sailors believe the boat which has the right-of-way at a crossing is the one which shouts the loudest, and does not sink after the inevitable collision!
• Kalikobass II
Sailing onboard the most spectacular yachts in the world is certainly exciting, although one of the best aspects about it is the people. Not only is it a real treat to sail with some of the best professional sailors in the world, but it frees me to focus on the photography, rather than looking over my shoulder wondering what is about to go wrong! I had a very prolific day sailing in the big breeze onboard Kalikobass II in the fantastic waters of Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Italy.
• Amneris
Ahhh, St. Barth's! Parked in the perfect anchorage outside of Gustavia, on the perfect little island of St. Barth's, sailors cruising aboard Amneris enjoy the same perfect sunset day after day (probably while enjoying a perfect bottle of French wine)!
• Built in 1913, Spartan is the last remaining New York Yacht Club 50 class wooden sailboat. The NY50 is a gaff rigged sloop, and only nine of these classic sailboats were built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, RI.

  • Rebecca
Blue boat, blue spinnaker, blue ocean, and big wind. It does not get much better than this for a photographer! The St. Barth's Bucket Regatta always provides a colorful delight, and the 139 ft. Rebecca, designed by German Frers and built by Pendennis, is a stunning subject from every angle.
Crew onboard 12 Metre Class Columbia prepare to drop the jib after rounding the windward mark at the 2008 Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta. Columbia is one of more than a dozen classic 12 Metre boats in their renaissance on the Newport, RI race circuit. Designed by Olin Stephens, Columbia was the first US 12 Metre Class boat to race in the America's Cup. She successfully defended the Cup against Sceptre, the British entry, in 1958.
• Spirit of Tradition
The Spirit of Tradition Class racing in the 2007 Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, viewed from Shirley Heights shortly after the start. Shirley Heights provided an overall perspective on the racing and some interesting geometric shots of the distant boats while I awaited the helicopter that transported me into the action.
Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II camera with 300mm lens and 1.4x tele-converter (420mm).

  • Kate
Kate is a reproduction of a first-rule (1908) Twelve Metre Class boat, built in St. Kitts in 2006. Pictured at the St. Maarten/St. Martin Classic Yacht Regatta in 2008, where she debuted the year before. With a steady 20-25 kts. wind, the bow leapt out of the water on every wave in this spectacular fashion. It was a very wet day aboard the photo boat!
• Adela
Built in 1903, the 182 ft. schooner Adela has been rebuilt and refit by the Pendennis yard in 1994 and 2000. Sailing here in the "Other Way Around" race at the 2009 Bucket Regatta, the shoals of St. Barth's provide a vibrant backdrop for the race.
• Juno
Built in 2003 by Gannon and Benjamin in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, Juno is a regular competitor in the Schooner Class at the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta. Pictured here in 2009, she nearly leaps into the sky at the start of the Windward Race.
• Eleonora's Leeward Side
Eleonora may be my favorite muse. Well, for a boat anyway! Since my first sail onboard during her racing debut at the 2003 Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, I continue to find new and interesting angles from which to shoot. This shot from 2008 gives a potent perspective on the extensive booms and the massive sails!
• Grenada Workboats #2
The annual Workboat Regatta portion of the Grenada Sailing Festival is perhaps one of the most spirited and colorful events in sailing! The racing between the sailors onboard these former fishing boats gets quite competitive, although the tactics have more to do with keeping the boat afloat than the racing rules of sailing. In fact, I am sure most of the sailors believe the boat which has the right-of-way at a crossing is the one which shouts the loudest, and does not sink after the inevitable collision!
• Hanuman
J Class Hanuman is a replica of the 1937 America's Cup boat Endeavour II. Built by Royal Huisman in 2009, Hanuman is at the top of the list with Eleonora as my new favorite boat to photograph. The idea of building a new J boat, or restoring any classic with such auspicious heritage, is a commendable boon to the sport, whether intended or not.
Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II camera with 24-70mm lens.
    J-Class-Hanuman-Aerial-poster.jpg
  • Hanuman
While it may have the heart of a proper, traditional sailing yacht from the 1930's, Hanuman has the high-tech brain and muscle to set the standard for the best contemporary superyachts. Photographed at dusk in Jamestown, Rhode Island.
Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera with 24-70mm lens.

  • Hanuman
Holding on to the mast while swinging back and forth at 150 ft. feet up in the air is no easy task, especially while the boat is pointed into the sun, instead of into the waves. And it is even more difficult while holding the camera beneath my dangling feet!
• Lulworth
Racing downwind at the 2007 Superyacht Cup in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, gaff cutter Lulworth is the last remaining Big Class Yacht of the 1920's. She was meticulously restored in 2006 and still contains many original components.
Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II camera with 300mm lens and 1.4x tele-converter (420mm).

  • Mariette
Sailing onboard Mariette, a Herreshoff-designed schooner built in 1915. Viewing Mariette from onboard the locally-built Carriacou Sloop to leeward (the downwind side) must have been quite a spectacle, although they nearly came to a stop as we passed them, completely blanketing their wind with our sails!
Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II camera with 16-35mm lens.

  • Meteor
The long trip out to this "windward mark" of the Bucket Regatta provides some spectacular imagery of the power of water and wind, but it is a brutal ride in an open 30 ft. photo boat! Sailing through the small islands surrounding St. Barth's during the "Wiggly Course," 169 ft. schooner Meteor went on to win the event. Built by Royal Huisman in 2007, Meteor is currently available if you want to test your sailing skills in the Bucket this year.
• Old Road Race
The fleet of antique sailboats competing in the Old Road Race, at the 2008 Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, sail close into the shore to get the lift (favorable wind shift) off the land and to escape the current. I had the helicopter pilot position us over the reef at a lucky moment when all the boats were neatly lined up, although one had sailed perhaps a little too close to the reef!
Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II camera with 24-70mm lens.
    Old-Road-Race-Antigua-Regatta-poster.jpg
  • Rambler
A remarkable helicopter-aerial view of Rambler shows the neatly trimmed wing shape of the sails, and the air funneling through the slot between jib and main sail. Photographically, I was drawn to the contrast of the golden color of the sails and the shallow blue sea beneath.
Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III camera with 70-200mm lens.
    Rambler-sailing-poster.jpg
  • Saudade
The bow of the new Tripp-designed Saudade slides cleanly through the crashing waves during her racing debut at the 2009 St. Barth's Bucket Regatta. At 148 ft., Saudade is the largest of the unmistakably chic Wally sailing yachts built to date.
Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III camera with 500mm lens.
    Saudade-sailing-poster.jpg
  • Signe
Sailing into one of the many December squalls that rolled through the 2008 Superyacht Cup Regatta in Antigua, the Signe crew was burdened with the unrelenting task of unfurling and then re-reefing the sails throughout the race. The recurring squalls only lasted for half an hour or so, and while this created extra work for the crew, the frequent weather transition provided spectacular colors for photographs.
• Team New Zealand preparing to hoist their spinnaker as they approach the weather mark during the fourth race of the 32nd America's Cup, Valencia, Spain, 2007. While team Alinghi went on to win the Cup, Team New Zealand was certainly the spectators' favorite. In fact, I am convinced that most of New Zealand's population traveled to Valencia to cheer for their team!
• Thalia
Built in 1889, gaff cutter Thalia was rescued and underwent a four year restoration in 2005 by her current owner. Possibly the last remaining yacht built by GF Wanhill in Poole, Thalia has a winning history of yacht racing in Ireland and England. Most recently she has been sailing in the Caribbean, and recently won the Classic Class at the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta.
• The Maltese Falcon
The Maltese Falcon is the most unique and unmistakable sailing yacht in existence. At 287 ft., it is quite a spectacle to watch this ship barrel along through the ocean with the rest of the fleet at the 2009 St. Barth's Bucket Regatta. The three self-standing masts rotate to control the trim of the fifteen sails and, somewhat miraculously, it does tack and sail upwind.
• Timoneer and Wild Horses
Racing at the 2008 Superyacht Cup Regatta in Antigua provided a challenging yet extraordinary range of conditions that changed very quickly. This shot was taken only ten minutes following the bright and sunny Wild Horses image with the big wave (also on display in the exhibition).
Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III camera with 70-200mm lens.

  • Velsheda and Ranger
The J Class former America's Cup boats are arguably the most widely known and highly revered class of boats ever built. With their graceful lines, gargantuan size, and extraordinary power, photographing these boats is a career highlight that I have the honor of repeating at least a couple times a year. Photographed here in Antigua, the challenge of creating this shot lies largely in having a photo boat that can keep up with Velsheda and Ranger!
Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III camera with 70-200mm lens.

  • Wild Horses
My low angle and the big seas crashing on the southern coast of Antigua dwarf the 76 ft. W-Class yacht Wild Horses. Designed by Joel White in Maine, the W-Class yachts are ever present in the classic yacht racing circuits in the Northeast U.S.A. during the summer and in the Caribbean in the winter.
