• Team New Zealand preparing to hoist their spinnaker as they approach the weather mark during the fourth race of the 32nd America's Cup, Valencia, Spain, 2007. While team Alinghi went on to win the Cup, Team New Zealand was certainly the spectators' favorite. In fact, I am convinced that most of New Zealand's population traveled to Valencia to cheer for their team!
• Signe
Sailing into one of the many December squalls that rolled through the 2008 Superyacht Cup Regatta in Antigua, the Signe crew was burdened with the unrelenting task of unfurling and then re-reefing the sails throughout the race. The recurring squalls only lasted for half an hour or so, and while this created extra work for the crew, the frequent weather transition provided spectacular colors for photographs.
• Tenacious
A peaceful moment riding on the leeward rail of Tenacious. This is a tricky location to perch and shoot, as most boats have no convenient hand rails. I am entirely reliant upon the rail and life lines, which could quickly become submerged by a large wave or during a sudden gust of wind!
• The Rainbow Fleet is Nantucket's pot of gold! These brightly colored micro-yachts add spirit and pulse to the annual Opera House Cup classic boat regatta.
• Grenada Workboats #1
The annual Workboat Regatta portion of the Grenada Sailing Festival is perhaps one of the most spirited and colorful events in sailing! The racing between the sailors onboard these former fishing boats gets quite competitive, although the tactics have more to do with keeping the boat afloat than the racing rules of sailing. In fact, I am sure most of the sailors believe the boat which has the right-of-way at a crossing is the one which shouts the loudest, and does not sink after the inevitable collision!
• Firefly
My father and I campaign Firefly, a wooden 1926 Herreshoff, in the summer classic yacht racing circuit on Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Built in Bristol between 1919 and 1938, the S Class is the oldest one-design class still sailing the original boats. A number of fleets of these competitive little yachts remain active. Many of the ninety-five original boats still hoist their sails, and fifteen competed in the 90th Anniversary Celebration at the Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta in 2009.
This photo was taken while tacking back to the mooring at dusk, following a peaceful sunset cruise around the harbor. A blur of The Newport Pell Bridge is visible in the background.
• Rebecca
Blue boat, blue spinnaker, blue ocean, and big wind. It does not get much better than this for a photographer! The St. Barth's Bucket Regatta always provides a colorful delight, and the 139 ft. Rebecca, designed by German Frers and built by Pendennis, is a stunning subject from every angle.
• Mariette and Eleonora
Designed by Nathaniel G. Herreshoff, Mariette and Eleonora are two of the most extraordinary classic schooners sailing today. While Mariette has been restored from her original construction, Eleonora is a reproduction from Herreshoff's design of Westward, completed in 2003. Photographed shortly after an unexpected squall dumped several inches of icy hail on the Regates Royale fleet in Cannes, France, 2007.
• Costa Smeralda
The Costa Smeralda, or Emerald Coast, of Sardinia is named for the gorgeous and unusual emerald green tone along the shore, created by the color of the submerged orange rocks. I was fortunate to be able to borrow a helicopter for a day, as this unique phenomenon is best illustrated from the air. Pictured here is Saudade, racing in the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta.
• Kalikobass II
Sailing onboard the most spectacular yachts in the world is certainly exciting, although one of the best aspects about it is the people. Not only is it a real treat to sail with some of the best professional sailors in the world, but it frees me to focus on the photography, rather than looking over my shoulder wondering what is about to go wrong! I had a very prolific day sailing in the big breeze onboard Kalikobass II in the fantastic waters of Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Italy.
• Saudade
The bow of the new Tripp-designed Saudade slides cleanly through the crashing waves during her racing debut at the 2009 St. Barth's Bucket Regatta. At 148 ft., Saudade is the largest of the unmistakably chic Wally sailing yachts built to date.
